Winner of 1984 U.S. Amateur
Won 1984 Western Amateur and followed that by winning 1985 PGA Tour Western Open as an amateur
Captured 1986 NCAA Division I individual title for Oklahoma State
Dealt with several physical ailments, including diabetes and surgery in 1992 and '95 to correct soft tissue pinching in his elbow
Has also dealt with foot issues
Caddie is Scott Tway, the brother of PGA Tour winner and fellow Oklahoma State alum Bob Tway. Bob Tway will caddie for his son, Kevin, at the 2008 U.S. Open, so it will be a family affair.
Member of 1985 USA Walker Cup team
Member of 2002 and 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup teams, and 2005 and '07 President's Cup teams
Had emotional win at 2007 EDS Byron Nelson Championship as Verplank, like many players who grew up in Texas and especially the Dallas area, idolized the late Byron Nelson
